I find it a frustrating process but I simply cannot outline first and then write. I am what is sometimes called a "discovery writer" in that I have to write in order to find out what I'm thinking. I can outline after I make a first draft. Hooray for bottom-up writing!Maggiehttp://nicoleandmaggie.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7188858439852729115.post-80325070324936099222010-07-28T17:12:36.908-05:002010-07-28T17:12:36.908-05:00aepva: you're a star on cat television!aepva: you're a star on cat television!Dame Eleanor Hullhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06512884104691200975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7188858439852729115.post-86032454574423521672010-07-27T19:05:03.477-05:002010-07-27T19:05:03.477-05:00Of course...cats are alien species. I seem to think it was a TV animated image but am wondering if it's something I imagined. Sometimes they do things that make me wonder what they are thinking...like when my big old Norwegian cat goes outside, only to watch me inside through the windows. Seriously, he sits on a rock and watches the windows for me. If it's nighttime and I turn out the lights, he gives up and comes in. What is the attraction of that?aepvanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7188858439852729115.post-17730256395848609802010-07-25T00:46:11.415-05:002010-07-25T00:46:11.415-05:00Me too. I sometimes wish I studied eccentric alien species. Of course, I live with a whole lot of non-humans: do you think I could get a paper out of the cats' interactions?Dame Eleanor Hullhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06512884104691200975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7188858439852729115.post-56367790963666395632010-07-23T17:50:25.327-05:002010-07-23T17:50:25.327-05:00And now to go in a completely different direction....And now to go in a completely different direction...

...when reading about your writing process I was reminded of a scifi book I read a while back - "The Algebraist" by Iain Banks - his main character is an academic in a future highly technical society and there is some lengthy exposition about the demands of his particular and unique discipline, which involves studying the culture of a very eccentric alien species.

Not finding fault here or suggesting arenas to explore, just thought it was rather neat your words reminded me of that text. I think Banks was writing with some affection for academics at least...aepvanoreply@blogger.com
